Good people (that's everyone I met, not just John & Ros), good roads for biking, good scenery, good company with other guests, good beer and a very good time. Gasthof Hochalmspitze is a great base to explore the region (which the good folks at GH can also help you with) - with a warm welcome and a cold beer waiting for you when you get back from your day's ride. I would certainly stay here again - in fact I will given the opportunity!

We had a very nice three days at Gasthof Hochalmspitze. The roooms were well proportiond and clean and the food was good. Unfortunately we were in a car rather than our bike and were unable to get the full experience of the mountain passes in the area but they were still prety good in the car. The National Park Pass which Ros and John provided was like mana from heaven, it allowed us to vist some National Park Attractions for free and others at a reduced rate, not to mention toll free access to the Grossglochner Mountain Pass.

Everybody was very happy with their stay at Hochalmspitze. Good food, clean rooms, great location for easy access to excellent riding roads. The 'Kärnten Card' was a great bonus and gave a welcome saving on road tolls.
However, by far the most talked about thing was the friendly welcome and the helpfulness of the staff at Hochalmspitze. Please pass on our comments of appreciation to all concerned. A return visit is very likely! We'll probably be going to the NEC this year, so we'll call in for a chat.
Many thanks for a great holiday.

The 2009 NEC motorcycle show was our first meeting the proprietors of the above establishment.
We were immediately taken with their enthusiasm for an area of Austria unfamiliar to us. There was then the question of “are these the sort of people we would be happy spending a holiday with?” The answer was a resounding Yes - even though we had planned 2010 holidays.
We arrived at Gasthof Hochalmspitze early evening of Saturday 18th June 2011.
After parking the Triumph in the spacious basement and receiving a kindly warning that vignettes should be attached to the front of the bike and not kept under tank bag plastic windows (60 Euro fine if apprehended), we had a free welcoming drink with John, Ros, Jane and the other guests.
After a quick shower, we were more than happy to join everyone else for dinner at the Alte Burg at Gmund. This establishment - a restaurant in an old castle - should not be missed. For us, the place incorporates history, eccentricity and superb food at reasonable prices.
Guests arrived at the Hochalmspitze and guests departed.. Everyone seemed to fit into this mixture of Austrian charm and British hospitality - be they British, German, Dutch or any other nationality.
The welcome was warm, the ambience friendly and the facilities just as required after a long ride. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and I cannot remember hardly anything being returned from our plates. Beds were comfortable and our room spacious. We must comment upon the honesty of the staff. A large (to us) denomination note was dropped. When we returned to our, it laid on top of our neatly made bed.
We spent the first Sunday walking in the valley and through the woods to Gmund where we visited the Porsche museum and could not resist another bite at the Alte Burg. A word of warning - we were so keen to set off, we did not read all the free attractions on the inclusive Hohe Tauern National Park card. We paid to go into the museum!
Attractions further up the valley include the Malta Hochalmstrasse (free for guests), a spectacular waterfall, tunnels and the Kolnbreinspeicher reservoir. This hydro electric facility includes a road over the dam and a superbly located modern restaurant. The whole attraction is used frequently by classic vehicle clubs and there is always something of interest going on.
For more adventurous trips, John offers free downloading of satnavs. His ability to programme all makes and models certainly impressed. With downloads in place, free rides over the Nockalmstrasse, Grossglockner Alpenstrasse and Gerlos Alpenstrasse (we paid on the way there but if you book over the internet, you will have your printed card with you!) are not to be missed. And there is no fear of getting lost.
Although our holiday was curtailed by a low speed (reversing actually!) accident we can only say how accommodating and helpful all staff were in all circumstances. We recommend the Gasthof. John & Angela Nickolds

spent 4 days here in June; amazing scenary and fantastic roads; Ros, John and not forgetting Jane were fantastic and really helpful in advising which routes to do. Did not have enough time; therefore will have to return. Would recommend staying here to everyone, seeing is believing.

Steve and I stayed in June for 5 days on our charity bike ride and had a real hoot with everyone. Had some awesome rides. Stelvio and back in 12 hrs was hard but obviously easy for an Italian bike -:). The little gasthaus up behind the dam is total peace.
Cant wait to go back again. Ralphy B

From arriving in a rainstorm and being offered a cold beer and a nice cup of english tea before we had barely got our feet down, to leaving 4 days later in glorious sunshine we couldnt have had a better time.
Hospitality, home cooked food, rooms and beer are second to none, we felt at home immediately. An evening of local entertainment and dancing was an added bonus and such a fun night
John and Martin were excellent hosts and nothing was too much trouble ( sorry we missed you Ros)
The hotel is in a perfect position to explore the area, with great roads on the doorstep ( ride to the dam its worth it ) and other rides an easy distance. We were lucky that John and Martin had a free day to show us round a little, we have been to the area before but John showed us fantastic roads we would never have found ourselves, not to forget the Nocky Flitzer Toboggan run. Even if John cant come out with you his local knowledge is extensive and he will point you to the best the area has to offer
If you are thinking of coming to Austria, Gasthof Hochalmspitze has everything the touring motorcyclist could need, just book it and go see for yourself you will not be disappointed. the old adage " arrive as guests leave as friends" has never been more apt
PROST !!
See you soon guys
P.S Can you find Mickey Mouse ??

On our way to Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia we stayed 4 nights in Gasthof Hochalmspicze. It was the most amazing time for all of us. We went to ride out with John and Ros to Slovenia and Italy one day and it was a lovely day out. All in all, we had a very good time and will definitely go back next summer. I think we should have stayed on for more days, as there were so many interesting routes to explore. Many thanks to the staff too who were all very hospitable and amiable. Thank you again.

We have had a great time in Malta warm welcome and a good atmosphere. Very nice place to stay. Nice clean room and such a comfortable bed. Ros & John are very helpful and knowledgeable of the area and routes. Many thanks to for the brilliant hospitality and for giving me some great memories. When we got back from a long day on our bikes and you were waiting with a very welcoming meal and drink (warm cup of tea with milk and Guinness as well). I could go on and on but just want to say “THANK YOU”. This place is a little England in Austria. You made it feel more than a holiday. I can't thank you enough. Would definitely come back again.
Lots of love and hugs.

A group of Northern Irish bikers, (The Flying Dicks) first time to this part of the world, great reception from Ros and Jon everyone enjoyed the friendly and relaxed atomsphere. The bed was as comfortable as a big comfortable thing. The roads are first class and there is far too much to do, so stay longer than 3 nights that's my suggestion. I hope to be back in the future and i think i can speak for Big Dick,Wee Dick,Ginger Dick and No Need Of a Dick who all rated the adventure 5*. Well done R & J hope all goes well with your homely setup. Thanks for the hospitality.

Phyllis & Alex,
This is our second stay with Roz and John at Hochalmspitze, if you want to get away from the rat race this is the place. Miles of local and motorway roads without the traffic jams. Great places to visit winter or summer there is something to suit all tastes (particularly the Austrian pastries), never a dull moment.

Best value for money !
In the last year, I have spent more than 100 nights in more than 25 hotels ranging from French economy hotels to 5* resorts... and the Hochalmspitze gets my first prize for value for money.
Tip : If you stay 2 nights, you get a free entrance card for local attractions (toll roads, mountain railways, water parks) which saves more than the cost of the second night
Having read the 6 reviews on booking.com, my expectations were very high .... but there were no nasty surprises and I can only agree with the quotes below from previous guests
"motorcycle garage, intereted and helpful people, relaxing atmosphere"
"The hotel has extremely warm and friendly atmosphere. I appreciated a lot that the managers of the hotel were British and not Austrian so that we had no problem in communication. Also the food was delicious: based on our experience, the restaurant at Gasthof Hochalmspitze is the best restaurant in whole village of Malta".
"We liked the clean room and the friendly, hospitable staff and atmosphere."
"Excellent english hosts who cannot do enough for you, and home cooked food is fantastic. We really liked the fact that the rooms are across the road as you do not get disturbed by late night drinkers. Lovely area to explore and ski slopes, waterfalls and Italy all within 45 mins drive. Very efficient set up for a remote austrian hotel and I would recommend it."
"Would be nice to have a TV in the room and also better quality towels."
I have deliberately left this last quote because I am talking about value for money. Anybody that wants the confort of a 3 star hotel with cable TV, room service and swimming pool should look elsewhere.
For those that can not leave their lap tops or Blackberrys at home, there is even free WLAN in public areas for which I have paid more than 8 euros a night in classier hotels.
PS Before saying the Hochalmspitze gets my vote for best value for money, I wanted to check that my experience was not a one off. So, I stayed a second time and got the same wonderful service and impression as the first stay at the hotel

Malta is friendly and peacefull village and an ideal place to relax and unwind. The Gasthof Hochalmspitze is in the heart of the village close to the shops, church and tourist offfice. Our hosts, John and Ros Gowers, could not have been more helpful and attentive to our needs. The food was excellent, and the Guinness well kept. Our room was spacious and had all the facilities that we would expect, and had a lovely view across the valley. Our favourite day was when we walked along quiet lanes to the historic town of Gmunt, had lunch in the square, and then returned on an equally delightful route to Malta. A wonderful holiday.

A motorcyclists heaven. Great windy roads and the National Park Karnten that John and Ros gave us let us go over certain passes for free, even the Grosglockner was free. The savings on those alone was like a free night. Food was great and I'm sure that Ros and John listen out for the bike returning because the beer was always ready. Thanks for a great stay.

Giacomo e Natascia (the lovely italian family) 14.07.09 23:51

I can only recommend this nice pansion for bikers and tourists as well. We had an excellent time in Malta due to our host parents Rose and John. The hospitality was excellent. They are very nice people with good sense of humour. John is an excellent cook and a crazy biker! The bikes were held in a safe garage with all necessary equipment for smaller maintenance. The rooms are quiet with a nice view to the Valley of Malta. Andrea - a friend of the family - is a nice lady with an excellent knowledge of foreign languauges. She speaks five languages fluently. No matter what kind of problem you have she will solve it.
John has a big selection of different drinks. He even has Kilkenny and Guiness from draft for resonable price. You pay more in Ireland for the irish beer than at John's. During our stay I never had the feeling that the pension was profit orientated.
Try and see!

I stayed here on a school trip with 60 puplis aged 11. They obviously did cause minor problems, but the lady and lord of the house took care of everything: They organised the rooms so that other guest were not disturbed, the kids loved the food (some were vegetarians or couldn't eat some of the foods for religious reasons - all of them got something that was to their liking), and ... John fixed one or two things that misteriously had come loose ;-)
Thanks a lot; see you with the next lot in September

The place is lovely, situated in a quiet village and run by amazingly nice people. The owners, Ros and John, were waiting us already on our arrival with a pint of beer. Andrea, an adorable Hungarian-born multi-language speaker (even fluent Spanish!) is helping them and the whole staff makes you feel better than at home. John is an excellent cook as well and willing to help visitors organizing the trips and excursions around the wonderful surroundings. The rooms, though not very modern, are spacious and provided with confortable beds and beautiful view to the valley.
I fully recommend it and take the opportunity to send my warmest regards to all of them,
